The History

The idea for Hope BC began in early 2006 when two friends, Geoff and Shelley, were canoeing down the Fraser River. Geoff had recently lost his job, and Shelley struggled with her issues. They were both looking for a place to go and relax, and they soon realized they could visit all of the fantastic Provincial Parks on Vancouver Island in just one week if they camped at each one! After talking about it for a while, they decided to make it a reality. They started an online forum where people could share ideas, and soon enough, they had a list of potential campgrounds. Geoff and Shelley then spent months visiting each one, finding the best locations, and designing the logo for their new campground.

Hope BC is now the largest campground on Vancouver Island, with over 200 campsites spread out over 14 kilometres of pristine rainforest. The campground is also home to the Vancouver Island Ecotourism Association (VIECA), which runs programs like bushcraft workshops, fishing trips, nature walks, and even ghost tours! Several restaurants and cafes are located within walking distance of the campground grounds.

Hope BC is one of the unique camping experiences you cannot miss.

Fishing in Bellingham Bay, British Columbia, is one of the best in the world!

One of the highlights that visitors to Hope BC will see is a boat tour through Campbell River Forest Park and ‘The Passage of Vuntut.’ The Passage of Vuntut is a 200-year-old forest with a fair share of battles between loggers and First Nations people. Logging was illegal in this area until 1998, so there are many landmarks along the way, like an old campsite used as a shooting range by loggers and even a Russian cannon used during World War II.

If you’re lucky, you might even encounter some bears or wolves while on your boat tour! Hope BC is also home to some of Canada’s best eagle-watching. We have over 500 pairs of eagles, 300 nesting pairs, and a significant number are on their way back to nest this year, so it seems like there is hardly a day that one of our Parks can’t boast an eagle sighting. Although we share our beautiful forests with wolves, lynxes, cougars and bears, we are undoubtedly the safest place in Canada to see them.

There are no roads through our parks, so they have plenty of time to learn where they can hunt without us disturbing them while they do so! Hope BC is known for its beauty but is also a center for recreation, such as skiing and snowmobiling. We have 70 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails and tons of snowmobile trails.

We might be the only place in Canada with a scenic lift to get you to our highest mountain, Mount Waddington. Hope is known for its natural beauty, but we are also a great adventure vacation destination. Look at our website and see what’s in store for you…
